CHAPTER 11 · PT Level 2

Recording, Reporting, Post-Cleaning and Protection

In this chapter · 8 sections

Learning outcomes

The learner should be able to create a traceable test record, distinguish worksheet from report, document product and viewing controls, preserve indication evidence, specify post-cleaning and restore required corrosion protection.

11.1 The examination record

The working record should make the test reproducible and reviewable. Include:

  • client, site, component and drawing identity;
  • material, product form, weld or surface identification and examination stage;
  • procedure, work instruction and acceptance source with revision or edition;
  • examination extent, datum, access and limitations;
  • penetrant product family, batch or lot and status;
  • pre-cleaning, surface condition and temperature;
  • application, penetration dwell, removal, drying, developer and development times;
  • white-light or UV-A equipment, meter identity, calibration status and readings;
  • reference-panel or system-check results;
  • indication location, morphology, dimensions, classification and evaluation;
  • repairs, retests, post-cleaning and protection; and
  • personnel identity, qualification, date and signatures required by the quality system.

Corrections must remain traceable. Do not erase or overwrite controlled records without following the authorised amendment process.

11.2 The report

The report communicates final examination scope, technique, results and disposition. It should be concise but not omit limitations. Separate observed indication, interpretation and evaluation. If acceptance was not part of authorisation, state results without inventing a pass/fail conclusion.

An image should include component identity or record link, scale, orientation, location datum and viewing mode. Image enhancement must not hide the original evidence; retain original files where the system requires it.

11.3 Post-cleaning

Developer and penetrant residue can interfere with welding, bonding, painting, plating, oxygen service, food or medical use, fatigue performance and corrosion protection. Post-clean by the approved method. Complex openings and threads may retain chemicals. Verify cleanliness to the specified standard rather than assuming one wipe is enough.

Protect cleaned metal from flash rust or environmental attack using the approved temporary or final protection. Do not apply oil, paint or inhibitor to a surface awaiting another process unless authorised.

11.4 Records and retention

The quality system defines report approval, retention period, electronic format, security and access. Retain enough information to link the result to chemicals, equipment and personnel. If an error is discovered after issue, use the formal correction and notification process.

Practical checkpoint

Complete a test record and final report for a training component with one relevant and one non-relevant indication. Exchange reports with another learner, who must recreate the examination scope and locate both indications using only the record. Fix every ambiguity found.

Common errors and misconceptions

Several common errors recur in this topic: reporting "PT complete" without defining the examined area; omitting viewing readings or chemical batches; writing only "crack" without observed evidence and location; cropping an image until its datum disappears; and applying corrosion inhibitor before the next process is confirmed.

Chapter summary

A defensible PT result is traceable from component and procedure to chemicals, process times, viewing conditions, indications and disposition. Post-cleaning and protection are part of product care. Clear records permit review, repeat testing and investigation.
